Recording the bass line for my new solo tune - “Your Love”. This was just the first rough take but I had the camera rolling to critique my playing. As well as the bass part, I also played the other instruments on this recording too!
First and foremost I’m a drummer but I play a few other instruments, mainly for my own enjoyment. To be honest, I wish I had the confidence I do on drums with other instruments but I also play Bass, Guitar and Keys. I’ve been working on songs like this for my solo Jazz, Soul, Funk and Gospel Project - The Cloud9 Mission.

Had to post this nifty little trick I picked up from Jojo Mayer. The right hand may look a little strange here but Im muting the snare while playing the hi hat and rim clicks. Im also pressing the stick into the snare which causes a slight overtone when you hit the hi hats. Towards the end I am muting the snare on and off which changes the pitch/timbre slightly.
The first video shows this technique being used to play Drum n Bass/Jungle while the second one is more straight Dance/Electronica.
Left hand wise its mostly all Moeller technique for the fast 16ths and a bit of Gladstone technique for the singles and doubles. Im also trying to learn a bit of KJ Sawka’s technique too, he has such a nice touch on the snare that seems to suit the genre better. Check him out if you havnt already, sick!
Sorry I havnt posted a video for a while. Still need to get a better camera but my new phone seems to have slightly better audio than the previous videos, the quality is still pretty crap though lol. Anyway, hopefully getting a digital camera soon so hopefully that will be better.
The kit Im playing has sadly seen better days. Its the practise/teaching kit at Greenbank Music Village where I work and its in dire need of some new skins. But hey, a bad workman blames his tools.
Drumming wise, Ive been hugely into Gospel Music for a few years now and Im hoping some of that awesome drumming style is beggining to creep into my playing. Search for “gospel drums” to see how its really done, theres some seriously sick drummers out there.
Thanks to the YouTube community for all the kind comments, votes, favourites and viewings on my One Handed Drum Roll video. Im espicially glad to have helped some people figure out this trick. I have a better camera now so hopefully I’ll get some more videos up soon.
