Freaky Drum Stick Trick
Freaky Drum Stick Trick
Thanks to YouTube user shkakhan1234 for alerting me to this cool trick. It has to be the freakiest looking trick Ive learned so far. The stick rolls across your knuckles and gets trapped by the other stick on the other side, by quickly twisting your wrist it comes back again. Took me about an hour to get it but Im still dropping sticks all over the place.

And yes I borrowed my Mum's camera for this one, still have yet to get a decent one of my own but theres loads of expensive drum stuff I want first lol.

Jazz Coordination Exercise
Jazz Coordination Exercise
Here Im playing an ostinato with the feet and the left hand whilst playing a 3/4 swing pattern on the ride with the right. Ive tried to break down the pattern for you and Ive also discovered that the first half of the ostinato can be applied to a nice latin pattern with rim clicks and the rack tom. Have fun!

Gospel Lick (part1)
Gospel Lick (part1)
Heres a gospel lick I came up with in the practise room. The combination between the hands and foot is R L R B B L B R B B L B and is 12 notes long played over 32nd notes. Im just experimenting with different different places I can move it on the kit. Have fun, blessings!

Paradiddle Independance Exercise
Paradiddle Independance Exercise
Heres an idea Ive been working on for a little while. Im playing a paradiddle between the floor tom, hi hat and snare drum. The left hand pattern allows you to play an off beat choke pattern on the hi hats. Then I play doubles on the bass pedal. Lastly, Im changing the pattern at the end by occasionally keeping the right hand on the floor tom instead of moving it around with the rest of the pattern.

One Handed Roll (Push-Pull Technique)
Heres a very short video of the push-pull technique. The camera battery died :(. I was inspired by buddy rich to learn this technique but after watching jojo mayer, I had to get it. Check him out, hes much faster than me.

Drum n Bass/Jungle - Snare Muting
Drum n Bass/Jungle - Snare Muting
Had to post this nifty little trick I picked up from Jojo Mayer. The right hand may look a little strange here but Im muting the snare while playing the hi hat and rim clicks. Im also pressing the stick into the snare which causes a slight overtone when you hit the hi hats. Towards the end I am muting the snare on and off which changes the pitch/timbre slightly.

Check my second snare muting video out too, Im applying the same idea to more straight dance/electronica beats. Ah the possibilities are endless lol.

Left hand wise its mostly all Moeller technique for the fast 16ths and a bit of Gladstone technique for the singles and doubles. Im also trying to learn a bit of KJ Sawka's technique too, he has such a nice touch on the snare that seems to suit the genre better. Check him out if you havnt already, sick!

Just warming up on a knackered old kit
Just warming up on a knackered old kit
Sorry I havnt posted a video for a while. Still need to get a better camera but my new phone seems to have slightly better audio than the previous videos, the quality is still pretty crap though lol. Anyway, hopefully getting a digital camera soon so hopefully that will be better.

The kit Im playing has sadly seen better days. Its the practise/teaching kit at Greenbank Music Village where I work and its in dire need of some new skins. But hey, a bad workman blames his tools.

Drumming wise, Ive been hugely into Gospel Music for a few years now and Im hoping some of that awesome drumming style is beggining to creap into my playing. Search for "gospel drums" to see how its really done, theres some seriously sick drummers out there.

Drum n Bass (Amen Break Loops)
Drum n Bass (Amen Break Loops)
Drum n Bass stuff again. The break Im playing at the start is the Amen Break (well sort of) taken from Amen Brother by The Winstons. Inspired by Jojo Mayer, Ive been trying out his looping ideas. Taking different parts/loops of the Amen Break, you can create more interesting beats. Im using a lot of Moeller Technique which I finally cracked a year ago after seeing Jojo Mayer and Derick Popes awesome videos (check em out on youtube). I think I need to play lighter next time though as it makes it sound more like Drum n Bass.

Drum Stick Tricks
Drum Stick Tricks
Just playing with a few tricks Ive learned from watching military/marching drummers. I could practise this stuff all day as its a lot of fun, theres a few mistakes in there but I was greatful not to have dropped a stick.

This will probably be my last video for a little while as I need to get a better camera.

One Handed Drum Roll (Freehand Technique)
One Handed Drum Roll (Freehand Technique)
Heres a little demo of the Freehand Technique or One Handed Roll as popularised by the awesome Johnny Rabb. I actually learned this technique while watching the John Blackwell DVD.

It works by using the rim of the drum as the fulcrum point and allows you to get two notes for each movment by using an upstroke (playing a note whilst lifting your hand up). Hopefully you can see how it works from the video.

Its a cool trick to use in a solo but I get the most use out of it playing Drum n Bass as you can manipulate the sound of the drum with the left hand whilst playing fast stuff with the right.

Confession time: Wish I could do the technique with my left hand though lol.

Bass Drum Technique (Side View)
Bass Drum Technique (Side View)
Please check my first bass drum video for a more detailed explaination of the technique. I was intrigued as to what my technique looked like from the side in my quest to perfect it further. Most Bass Drum videos Ive seen are shot from this angle and I wanted to see if I had enough relaxation. The pedal itself (and kit) is the practise kit at work so sadly it takes a bashing from about 5 drummers a day and is not the greatest. Helps me to practise on kits like this though as all these techniques become a lot easier once I get to play my nice Yamaha/Zildjian. A bad workman blames his tools as they say!

Independance Exercise
Independance Exercise
This video is an Independance exersise I wrote that mimics the sounds of double bass drumming on a single pedal.

The exercise is first played right handed. Im playing doubles between the snare bass and floor tom with the right hand and then adding the hi hat with the left. First I play quarter notes on the hi hat, then 8th notes and then off beat 8th notes.

I then repeat the exersize left handed. I play the doubles with my left hand and the ride with my right.

Using this pattern and the bass drum technique in my last video, you can mimic the sound of two bass drums using one single pedal. Its a good exercise for independance too.

Bass Drum Pedal Technique
Bass Drum Pedal Technique
Ive been asked a few times what pedal technique I use. Its a sort of sliding motion using the sweet spot to get enough bounce for the second note when playing doubles. The sweet spot is (usually) located 1-2 inches from the top of the pedal and it seems to bounce back quicker when playing in that area. I do not use my heel but rather make the first note on the sweet spot and the second note at the top of the pedal board. Both notes are made using the ball of my foot using my ankle. Never been a fan of double pedals so I developed this way of playing fast bass drum stuff. If someone can tell me what this technique is called, whether Im doing it correctly or if I just made it up I would be most appreciative. Any info you have is helpful to me.

Practise Warm Up Drums
Practise Warm Up Drums
Just warming up on the kit. Its not my kit in these videos, Im using the teaching kit at work. I teach at Greenbank Music Village in luton. For some reason the snare restrainer keeps coming off every now and then and the bass pedal aint the greatest. Appologies for the poor quality as I recorded it on my phone.
